I think it’s one of those things that the Professional Drinker in most of us knows. If you are going to drink heavily, eat something first… preferably ‘soakage’…. delicious soakage.
It does surprise me when a party featuring food forgets this little tit-bit, leaving the food until as late as possible. For me, this has boiled down to 2 things.
1) The organiser has been misguided and has forgotten this. Or:
2) It’s on-purpose. You gotta earn your chow and/or they don’t want food to be in the way of their objectives.
Number two has resulted in parties that I try to forget…but that didn’t work, so I made a comic instead 😀
So what kind of Sadistic game are they playing here?
As with some of the office parties I have been to, the details will be a surprise….a horrific surprise :O
Fortunately, when my company had parties they always started with food and then would have the beer truck show up. I made sure to leave early to avoid any possible problems with drunk coworkers driving.
Sadly that failed to save me with the final party we had. The beer truck hadn’t even showed up yet, people were starting to have lobster and corn and the like… and someone’s van lost control and ran over two people and hit two others. One of them died.
We’ve not had an office party since, not even the winter parties that took place in a museum. The official reason is that we’ve “outgrown” any affordable venues (and the company has been hiring). But I know the truth.
I was one of the MERTs on hand, though I ended up taking the shirt off my back and holding it over the face and upper torso of one of the less injured so he wouldn’t suffer sunstroke. Over a year and a half later it still haunts me.
Sorry about that last party you last described. That really sounds like a horrible situation 🙁 As bad as the parties I have been to have been, I have not experienced anything that bad.
