Uh oh…did anyone else see that coming? I honestly hope not, as I’m hoping for a surprise there!
This is posed before the actually baby birth, so I’m hoping to edit this text later. If not, please stay tuned for updates!

Well, at least I didn’t. Nor do I have any idea of where this is going… this “GREG initiative” is a rather big operation. The big ruse with the company party cruise seems unnecessarily complicated. And the leader doing this? Doesn’t those bewitching lockets do away with the need for people to come and work willingly? So what plans do Laura *really* have for Karen?
Also note that since Laura has now revealed herself as the leader, Karen is now liable to pop the fake knots and beat her down. Either she thinks she can take her down, or she didn’t hear about those fake knots and have somehow been unable to spot them.
All in all, as opposed to your last comment Laura now seems to be… not very bright at all!
Anyhow, you have me surprised. Absolutely. But also quite lost.
My last comment was designed to throw you off. I didn’t want to mention that Laura was head of the GREG Initiative, thus my cryptic comment about her being sharp.
Sorry about feeling lost. Part of that is intentional. I’m hoping that starts to become more clear when you learn more about Laura’s character and her motivation for doing all this.
It is true that GREG could just go out and kidnap people directly from the ferry. Would save a lot of time and effort to just put medallions on them there and offload them into the mine.
*However* you’ll notice that they are also being very picky about who does what. Some become mindless mine-drones. Some are selected to be ‘Flower-Girls’ or operators. The remainder a left to fight to the death. Part of the delay is down to “Team-Building” (the main theme of this story thread). GREG want to use the pretense of Team-Building to pick-and-choose who they like for their own teams.
I suppose the GREG Initiative is my take on all of the negative aspects of team-building activities that companies often champion, and Laura is in essence the usually misguided HR Manager who’s behind it all.
Although don’t forget, Laura is also a member of the Tantrum clan…and as we know from Prof. Tantrum, they can be a little unhinged.
Well, after Laura and the professor noted that this is disturbingly similar to their family BBQ, I did expect the leader of GREG to turn out to be another member of the wicked Tantrums.
They being picky about who does what and some being left in a fight to the death is something I have somehow missed. Maybe it is more clear when reading it all in one sitting, I’ll do that when this story-arc is finished and we’ll see then. Or it might just be me.
Anyway, even after today’s page (the next one from this comic) Laura absolutely needs more explaining. But it sure will be interesting!
@O8h7w: Laura is a bit of a challenge character-wise, and I mostly have myself to blame for it. She *does* have reasons for what she is doing, but like her uncle her morals are utterly corrupted.
Laura’s selection process is mostly down to who she prefers to have as mind-slaves. Those who have avoided the temptation to drunkingly destroy each-other with the weapons available are more desirable to her. It also thins out the amount of people who are likely to put up a fight against her.
Her pickiness as to who gets to be in her elite forces, and who gets to be a mindless miner will become clearer soon (I hope).
I suppose this whole angle is my snide take on how team-building can often have an in-built agenda, which can have little to do with building teams, and a lot to do with the organizer’s personal goals.
…that….or I just wanted to draw an evil girl going all Bond villain on us 😀
On this much later re-read, this reveal managed to surprise me again! I did not see it coming, I had forgotten about it. Quite funny as just a couple pages earlier I wrote that if there is one thing this story needs more of, that would be surprises…
That Laura has been taking the whole situation a little lightly is quite clear, but in hindsight only. Perfect! 🙂 It is also far more clear when reading the whole story over a couple of days that GREG has been a bit picky about who does what, it was pointed out by Sam for example.
I guess a large part of why this comes out of the blue when reading is that GREG seemed to have their leader already, in that crazy guy that initially greeted the Call2Home staff when they came to the island and has later been seen managing things from some kind of command center. Very clever 🙂
Thank you for saying. I was part of my planned hood-wink for the reader. I made it appear that Mr. Sunshine was the leader of GREG, when really…nope…he’s just a henchman.
