Aoife sees dead students…all of the time…
Yea, I know. It’s a cheap reference, but I couldn’t help myself 😀
This aspect of Aoife’s character didn’t come to me until I started drawing this page. Actually, this page didn’t even exist in the original 2006 draft of Bata Neart. Instead, I reworked the content ans spread it across 3 brand new 2012 pages. This is the first of the 3.
Next Friday, you will be treated to Aoife’s “Ninja” skills.
Yeah, I imagine nuns wouldn’t have taken a shine to the sailor suits. I’d actually forgetten it was one of _those_ schools.
Ninja skills = out a window? I guess we’ll find out…
I’m guessing these ghosts are a harmless bunch, if Aoife can act so blasé about them. Though I wouldn’t ever bet on it. Does she go wandering in the forest, at night, with ghosts, on a regular basis? D:
Ah yes…Colasite Muire is one of *those* schools. Truth is, almost all remaining single-gender dormitory schools in Ireland are run by Catholic orders (Nuns for the Girls and Christian Brothers for the Boys). They have been in decline for decades, as most seem favor state operated co-ed schools, but you can still see a few institutions similar to Colasite Muire around Ireland.
Regarding Aoife…I was kind of wondering myself what I’m doing here. In the original 2006 draft of this chapter Aoife was afraid of the ghosts. However in this draft, it seemed natural for her to be comfortable with them. Part of it might be down to her quirky nature, but another part of this is down to her back-story.
Over the years, I’ve fleshed out the Bata Neart characters a bit more in my head, and a lot of them have detailed back-stories. I’m probably not going to cover Aoife’s back story for quite a long while (not this side of Chapter 10 either way), but I will get there. But the meantime, all I can really say is that her comfort with the idea of ghosts does kind of makes sense for her.
