NB! Japanese layout! Reads RIGHT TO LEFT!!

A bit of linguistic trouble for Ashling in this week’s page. (This is also Aoife’s only appearance in this story I’m afraid. I’ll explain why in a later update.)

Part3 – ‘Hanging out’ with Nao on Google

As I mentioned in the last part, there was a desire to get Manga School Nakano’s international program to a larger online audience. However, when the idea to run classes online came up there were a good few technical challenges. At the time, there were only a couple of viable video-conferencing options what would have worked, and many were either difficult to administer or had a large cost attached to it. However, that all suddenly changed:

Google had upgraded their existing IM client to include video chat, conferencing and direct streaming to YouTube. In addition there were user controls which could restrict access to only fee-paying students. Together with screen-sharing and multi-camera support, Hangouts appeared to be as powerful as the business edition of Skype…main the difference being that it was free.

This was ideal. Minimal technical support was needed (just a functioning PC & internet connection), and since many already had a Google account, user control wasn’t a big problem.

The online course seemed to be a possibility now, and thus Nao began work to make it a reality.

..and so we began to test it out πŸ™‚

It seemed to work. Further practical tests went well, and so Nao proceeded further to make the online program around this tool.

Next week, I’ll talk more about the prep work on getting the program launched.
