Come on Fiona, don’t forget the basics of driving. Hands at ten and two, and don’t get freaked out by the mention of ancient monsters….basic stuff….

Apparently, the name rings a (big, nasty) bell for Fiona–wait until she finds out that Ashling has been blasting them into gravel.
Fiona looks like she may be wishing she could trade this situation in for having the unstoppable cyborg from the future chasing her car…
Hmmmm… my kanji’s pretty bad, but I think I recognize the radicals for woman and life?
C’mon Fiona, drive it like you stole it. Oh, wait… ๐
Isn’t it fun when legendary monsters comes to life, Fiona? Good thing Ashling has her boom stick along to take care of any primitive screwheads.
@Delta: Fiona is a bit of a folklore nerd so she’s probably familiar with some of the monsters therein….
Still not sure how she’ll feel about Ashling actually fighting them… ๐
@Kessy: Since Aoife is a bit of a Japan-o-phile and Fiona’s car is a Japanese-market import (more on that later), she’s gifted her with a Good Luck talisman which are apparently often used in Japan. Alas, Aoife isn’t as good in Japanese as she think’s she is, and instead of getting the traditional “Traffic Safety” charm for Fiona’s car she has instead bought a ๅฎ็ฃ charm……which seemed funny at the time ๐
@Azreal: This actually is Fiona’s car. What is interesting though is that no-one appears to be surprised by her Driving Glasses……Or did no-one notice yet? ๐
(Checks Jisho) “Easy childbirth” LOL! Prolly a little premature for that. At least I’d hope so. Catholic schools may not be what they were a generation or two ago but somehow I suspect the school would have serious problems with that.
My understanding is that the sale of those sorts of charms is often a major source of financial support for shrines and temples in Japan. They come for all sorts of things. I believe “good luck on exams” is one of the more popular ones.
Well, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Fiona wearing glasses, is it? I’m pretty sure? Wait… (scours memory and then scurries to the archive) …no, she was wearing glasses at least when they first brought Aine home.

I’m still mildly surprised that Fiona not only has a car, but is allowed to keep it at school. Is Fiona not local to the school like Ashling and Aoife? This seemingly being some sort of boarding school I suppose it stands to reason. I don’t recall it being mentioned or discussed before. But then I’m old and crap so it very well may have been.
@Rawr: We noticed her glasses, but as Kessy mentioned, we’ve seen them before. Although I think I previously assumed they were more for reading than things like driving.
@Azrael: I think this is the first time that Fiona’s car has been mentioned. Although the impression I’ve gotten is that Wicklow is a pretty rural place, so I’d imagine driving is more important there than it would be in an urban center like Dublin.
I have no experience with driving, but I was under the impression that it’s not uncommon for people with less than perfect vision to have provisional driver’s licenses that require them to wear glasses or contacts in order to be legal to drive?
Ah! She had worn glasses before. That’s me not remembering stuff in my own damn comic ๐ Apologies.
Kessy’s impression of Wicklow is correct. The place is relatively rural compared to Dublin and public transport around the county is made all the harder with the Wicklow Mountain range making up most of it. There is some distance between the school and the town where Ashling, Fiona & John live. If I ever get around to making Aoife’s Guide to Bata Neart, maps are going to be part of this. In the meantime, hopefully this Google Maps link will work.
Ashling & Co come from Ashford, while the school is supposed to be just south of Wicklow Town, to the south of that golf club you might see on the map. It’s not a long drive, but getting normal busses is a bit of pain in rural Ireland. Almost every route is directed to Dublin, meaning that even if you just want to go to a neighbouring town by bus, you might have to go all the way to Dublin to change busses. So for many in rural Ireland, life is much easier with a car. Within the Greater Dublin Area you don’t really need a car and I coped there for years without one.
As Kessy mentions it is requirement on on Irish driver’s licence (and petty much all EU driver’s licences) to have indication code printed onto it if the driver needs glasses to drive. That’s only printed on if glasses are actually needed though if your vision is ok, the part is left blank.
I’m sure that Sharon’s car has a charm for “Finding Love” or some such thing.
More Sharon’s style for her to have a “Please God can we win just ONE match. Just ONE! That’s not too much!” charm ๐
