Did Aoife cook? Run away, Γine. Run away. π
I’m surprised Aoife isn’t trying to take a picture of Aine sitting like that. LOL
So is that a communal kitchen for the dorm? The dorms I lived in only had cafeteria style dining halls.
It looks like Aine is feeling a bit homesick, and wishing that her Muinteoir could share her joy. Fortunately, Aoife has the antidote. Food and goofball conversation. ^^
Yeah, nothing cures a bad mood of any kind like food and interraction with people. And Aoife’s about as much people as you could possibly want, so I don’t think Aine will be feeling sad and lonely for very long.
@Azrael: I’m pretty sure Fiona cooked and Aoife just helped; kind of like Fiona’s sous chef. Fiona’s in the background next to the stove, so most likely she’s finishing up preparing something to either put on or that just came off the stove. I think everyone’s safe. π
But I don’t think that Aoife would be a bad cook. She’d just be…”creative” is all. But who knows? Maybe some of the things she comes up with aren’t that bad at all.
@Kessy: As much as Aoife likes Aine, I think she’d rather save those opportunities for when Ashling is sitting in the window like that. π
@Rawr: I really like that top panel. There’s just something about the way it looks…
Oh, and belated happy birthday.
They really need to get Aine an actual complete outfit. You’d think she’d be cold.
Then again, she spent heaven-knows-how-many years as a popsicle. Maybe she’s immune to cold now.
@melaredblu: I suspect aine would be a lot more used to the cold just because of the period she’s from. (no central heating back then.) Also, I don’t think it generally gets all that cold in Ireland. (I’m sure Rawr will correct me if I’m wrong.)
@Azreal: It was a group effort, but Aoife did make her Chicken Salad. Not to worry, she means well and is the better cook amongst the girls. It’s just that she goes a little overboard with spices whenever she experiments π
@Kessy:Well…Aoife already has seen plenty of her. It only just dawned on me now how that pose would appear from Aoife’s point of view…especially considering that she’s still ‘going commando’ at the moment O.o
This is a communal dorm kitchen / living room (another shot of it coming up on the next page). When I was working out the layout of the contemporary dorm-house I had shared kitchen/living room on each floor with about 10 students per floor. There is a dining hall in the main buildings for lunchtime, but I kind of imagine an ethos at this school which is encourages the boarding students to be a little more self-reliant, with responsibility to stocking their own kitchen and preparing some of their own meals. The room also includes a mini-library, a reading nook, and the booth you saw in the last chapter
@Delta: Alas yes, she’s homesick. She’s in a strange part of the country, with a group of strange girls, in a new world full of odd ‘magic’ that seems useless. But Aoife does indeed have the antidote…and as usual the antidote is Aoife herself π
@melaredblu: They really do π That’ll be the lead-in to the next chapter. She needs to get something that isn’t…well…Aoife-sized ;D But yes, spending a little over an Eon in a magic freezer-box might make her a little immune to the cold. She’d probably do well over here in Norway π
@Kessy: Pretty much correct about the cold in Ireland. The island of Ireland sits right in the middle of the Gulf Stream, resulting a very temperate climate. It rarely gets very cold with -10 degrees Celsius (14F) being the extreme limit, and 30 degrees Celsius (86F) being the upper limit. In August (which is the month these early chapters are set in), the Irish Summer is usually at its height, with several very hot days and nights. On a night like that, sitting on the window like Γine might be the only option to cool down.
Actually when it comes to hot weather, few Irish buildings even have effective AC. This is due to the Irish Summer being so short that it doesn’t often make sense to invest in installing one. So for a handful of nights a year, you open up all of your windows and hope for a breeze π (Which is usually the same night when someone’s house-alarm malfunctions and sounds out for the whole damn night…ah…memories π )
@Farren: Aoife is plenty of people indeed. I don’t think Γine will have much chance to be alone π
Glad you liked the top panel. I really agonised a bit on that one, while trying to make a bit of an ‘establishing mood’. It took a few tries to get right π
About Irish summers – I know! I went to visit a friend in northern England (Leeds) in August a few years ago, and I was completely o_O when I got off the plane. When I met up with my friends the first words out of my mouth were, “You call *this* summer?” It was so bizarre, it was August and some people were wearing jackets.
I live in Philadelphia, and as I’m writing this it’s 7:30 PM. It’s evening and the sun is getting close to the horizon, it’s starting to cool down from the heat of the day. Here in my room it’s 34C and it’s been really humid for days. We consider a heatwave to be a few days in a row with highs over 32C and we usually get several each summer. Very occasionally the temperature pushes 40C. When its very hot even at night the temperature may not go below 27C. I really hate this time of year. -_-
Needless to say, around here you do not wear a long sleeve hoody in August. If you do the police will prolly keep an eye on you since the assumption would be that you’re trying to hide something.
Maybe going overboard with the spices isn’t the only issue with Aoife’s culinary experiments? I can imagine her saying something to the effect of, “Well why not try peanut butter and soy sauce on blueberry muffins?”
